Candidate Spotlight: School board candidate talks programs, taxes

For Star Poole, of Williamsport, running for a director seat with Williamsport Area School District is a way she can take an active role in her kid’s schooling. Poole is seeking the Democratic nomination on May 21.

“I think it will show my kids that if you have a goal and stay focused and if you want to do something just try to do it,” Poole said. “This was an opportunity that I saw opened and I felt like it was meant for me to try.”

A mother of five, Poole loves to learn and wants her children to have as many opportunities as they can within the district. Three of her kids are enrolled in Cochran Primary School. Poole especially is seeking more after-school programs for the students.

More programs will give children opportunities they may not receive elsewhere, Poole said, and added that they can help diminish the temptation of drugs within the schools.

Poole said she wants to be involved in the community and is a board member for The Heart of Williamsport, the Beloved Community Council and North-Central Pennsylvania’s Alternatives To Violence.
