Williamsport shelter open to homeless on below-freezing nights

On these subzero nights, warmth can be found at First United Methodist Church in Williamsport, 604 Market St.

John and Sue Best, members of the church and coordinators of the Code Blue Emergency Warming Shelter, will be setting up shop this week and will remain open until March 16 on any night that dips below 32 degrees.

The doors open from 9 to 10 p.m. and then close until 7:30 a.m. A pillow, cot, blanket, snacks and coffee are provided.

The church is the only “pop-up shelter” in the area for overnight weather emergency lodging, according to John Best.

Other, more permanent, shelters include Saving Grace and American Rescue Workers.
