Tips for designing a large garden

So, you’ve been taking great care of your small garden for a while, and you want to upgrade. There’s no better feeling than expanding your garden so that you can grow more things! If you want to create a large garden, though, you need to know the right way to go about it.

If you set it up incorrectly, you could end up wasting tons of money and effort. We don’t want that to happen to you, which is why we’ve compiled some tips for designing a large garden.

Pick the Right Spot

The first step is to pick the right location for your more extensive garden. The first question you should ask yourself is how much space you want. Are you planning on growing rows of tomatoes, potatoes, and other fruits and veggies?

Then you’ll need to make sure you have adequate space for them. If you’re working in your backyard, plan out how much space you can use for your new garden. You should also make sure:

  • You have access to a water source
  • Proper drainage methods are available
  • Your garden is close to your toolshed

As long as you can check all these boxes, you’ll have a fantastic location for your new garden.

Set Up an Irrigation System

You may have watered your smaller garden manually. That can work for small gardens, but more extensive gardens benefit from irrigation systems. Irrigation systems provide consistent water for your garden, and they can save you money.

Since you can program your irrigation system to use a set amount of water, you’ll end up wasting less of it. That’ll do a lot to lower your water bill each month. Also, make sure you know the telltale signs of a faulty irrigation system to prevent problems.

Protect Your Crops

A bigger garden means you’ll attract more attention from pests. You’ll need to take some concrete protective measures to keep your crops in good condition. An excellent form of defense is a fence or retaining wall that keeps out the critters. You can also invest in some safe pesticides to stop insects from destroying your harvest.

Spruce It Up

The better you can make your garden look, the more time you’ll want to spend in it. That’s why you should make an effort to make your garden look nice. You can put up decorations as well as strategically plant your flowers and crops in desirable locations.

So, there are our tips for designing a large garden. More extensive gardens can pose some challenges, but they’re also incredibly rewarding.
